The University of York was founded in the 1960's and had just 215 undergraduates! Over the years it has expanded from its original six departments to its current thirty departments. In 2024 the university currently has 11 colleges and welcomed almost 20,000 students.

  • Rankings

    The University of York ranks in the Top 40 for Arts and Humanities and Top 100 for Social Sciences on the Times Higher Education University Rankings 2020 and ranks 18th out of all universities in the UK in 2024.

  • Employability

    York University has specialised employability coaching and helps students with work experience and placement years to ensure maximum employability after graduation. Schemes include a year in industry, Study abroad, work experience and Internships.

  • Fees

    Fees at York University are £9250 for UK students and typically £23,700 for International and EU students (2024/25 Rates), though this is subject to change depending on the department(s) that run the course and the number of lab hours involved.

  • Bursaries

    The University of York offers a Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust bursaries for children of commercial travellers, grocers or chemists which can range from £3000/year for undergraduates to £5000/year for post graduates. Scholarships offered include the Laidlaw Scholarship for research projects and York Future Scholarships of bettered £250 and £3000 to provide access opportunities. Accommodation

The University says it can ‘guarantee you a home on or near campus, whether we’re your firm or insurance choice, if you apply by the accommodation deadline date’ The University offers accommodation in its 9 colleges, ranging from self catered to catered and part time catered. Rooms offered are en suit and also shared with the option to live on East Campus or West Campus. More can be found here.

Students' Union

York Students’ Union is run by five sabbatical officers and runs over 200 societies as well as organising volunteering and fundraising opportunities for students to take part in and run! The annual Raising and Giving week allows students to take part in activities set for a good cause on and off campus in addition to the 60+ sports clubs students can also take part in.

Famous for

York University has produced many well known alumni including 15 members of the house of Lords and specifically author Anthony Horowitz, Director of the Natural History Museum Sir Micheal Dixon and former Prime minister of Portugal Aníbal Cavaco Silva completed his Economics doctorate at York University.

News

The University of York announced on the 10th October that they were to lead a national study on the Impact of Covid-19 on mental health which will recieve £2 million in funding and was recognised as a ‘University of Sanctuary’ on September 25th.
