The proximity of the Peak District eleven miles northeast of Burton, is an interesting stopping-off point. Its workaday centre is partly redeemed by several long and handsome nineteenth-century terraces and its cathedral, whose pinnacled tower soars high above its modest surroundings on Queen Street. Of the city’s several museums, easily the best is the Derby Museum and Art Gallery on the Strand, a five-minute walk from the central marketplace.
