Glasgow is a city you get to know over time as it starts to feel like home. It is full of small details, from wall murals to tucked away streets, and much of student life is about finding your own favourites. The centre is easy to walk around, and areas like the West End and Glasgow Green quickly become part of your routine.
One of the main reasons students choose Glasgow is due to its reputation for being friendly. The phrase “People Make Glasgow” reflects that. It is also more affordable than many other UK cities, with lower living costs and rent, which makes a real day to day difference.
As the UNESCO City of Music, live music is a big part of life here, from smaller venues to places like the Barrowland Ballroom and the OVO Hydro. Outside of the music scene, museums and galleries such as Kelvingrove and The Burrell Collection are free to visit, and there are parks across the city for study breaks or walks. Whatever your interests, there is always something to do.
Student life varies depending on what you enjoy. You might spend an evening at Hillhead Book Club, head out to Box or Polo, or meet friends for a drink in the summer.
Getting around the city itself is rather straightforward, with many areas within walking distance, as well as buses and the subway linking the main areas.
Rent is cheaper in Glasgow than it is in London as well as general living costs, however the margins are closer than other cities.
The nightlife in Glasgow is very popular, with most students heading to West End for pubs and bars, or clubbing around Merchant City. Bamboo, Garage and SWG3 are some of the most popular clubs amongst students.

Glasgow is a very strong university city, with several top study location choices. The University of Glasgow is one the UK’s top universities with its Russel Group status and quite high world ranking. Glasgow Caledonian is also a highly recognsied modern institution.

It is one of the UK’s biggest nightlife cities so it can get quite lively but it is generally safe as long if you take the usual precautions – don’t walk home alone and stay in well-lit areas etc.
Most students live in West End, typically within Hillhead, Partick, Finnieston, or Kelvinbridge. Others live in the city centre/Merchant City, Dennistoun, or Shawlands.
With Glasgow being one of the largest UK student cities, universities ensure to have campus security and safety services to help keep the large student population safe. As a result, most students feel safe walking around at night.
