The modern, sometimes futuristic, feel of the main buildings belies the University's academic heritage. Set up as a university college in the nineteenth century, the University began development in 1954 at Whiteknights, once the manorial estate of Earley Whiteknights and later the Marquis of Blandford. While his eighteenth-century landscaping is still very much in evidence, the parkland development continues today, fulfilling the Victorian vision of a university meeting and surpassing the challenges of the modern world.
