Tis' the season for revision

By Simon Thompson

Nearing the end of term, with Christmas getting closer, exams are at the front of studentís minds across the country. Whilst Christmas is a time for family and fun, for many of us itís a chance to catch up on much needed revision after months of avoiding the word. Everyone copes with stress in different ways; I have some helpful tips to help you exam-stressed students out there who are already entering the stage of panic.

1. Create a clear revision plan. By managing your time will ensure that you cover all the relevant topics for your exam. Being well prepared is the key to staying calm.

2. When revising take plenty of breaks, do some exercise and ensure you maintain a healthy balanced diet. It will not only help your energy levels but your concentration levels as well.

3. Take time out to see old friends. Keep a healthy balance of work and fun, by revising 24/7 will cause you to lose motivation. Set yourself a target each day and if you reach it then reward yourself.

4. Do not cram revision into the night before. You may believe you work better under pressure however start early and learn topics in short bursts, you are far more likely to retain the information.

5. Get plenty of sleep the night before an exam. Many students turn up for the exam on little sleep meaning they, in fact, are not working to the best of their ability.

6. Try not to panic in the exam. Take time to read the questions carefully, many students rush to read questions leading to misunderstandings which cost you vital marks

7. After the exam, forget about it. Itís done and by discussing answers with friends will increase stress. None of you know who is right so try not to dwell on the past.

Finally have a merry Christmas. Take advantage of not having to live off basics beans on toast and doing the dreaded pile of washing up. Take a few days off to spend with your family, enjoy and GOOD LUCK!
