Medical student sold sex to pay university bills

Cash-strapped students have offered sex-for-sale to raise the money to pay their living costs and complete their courses, a court heard.

The sordid details were revealed in a sex trafficking case involving an escort agency in Glasgow.

One girl, an unidentified girl from Belfast on a medical course in Edinburgh, gave evidence that she turned to prostitution because of financial problems.

She offered sexual services working part-time in a sauna in Edinburgh before working as a prostitute for an escort agency.

Police and social workers put the student and another witness, a 23-year-old Bolivian woman in to protection over concerns for their safety.

The pair behind the agency, Stephen Craig, 34, of Clydebank, Glasgow, and Sarah Beukan, 22, of Leith, admitted charges at Glasgow Sheriff Court relating to moving sex trafficking involving 14 people between October 2009 and September 2010.

Craig also faces a proceeds of crime hearing to strip him of any assets that resulted from cash he earned from the sex trade.

Detectives uncovered connections between Craig and Beukan with organised crime gangs running prostitutes in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Belfast, Cardiff and Newcastle.

Evidence included travel documents, internet and newspaper adverts, mobile phones and credit cards linked them to each other and prostitutes.

Depute fiscal Mark Allan told the court: "The vulnerable witness accounts are those of a young student who, through difficulties with debt, became involved initially in the sex industry within saunas before moving to the criminal enterprise run by the accused.

"She described a feeling of relief when the police arrived and that cycle of her life had been broken."

Defending Beukan, Donald Findlay QC, said she was a prostitute and helped run the business but made no financial gain.

Sheriff Sam Cathcart deferred sentence until next month for reports.

The case follows press revelations in Scotland that claimed students were turning to prostitution as escorts in Edinburgh to fund their courses, with some selling sex in student halls.
