Student Article - Renting private accommodation. What a mistake.
Author: Daniel Harding
I MAY TAKE SOME TIME TO GET TO MY POINT BUT I REALLY NEED TO EXPLAIN WHAT HAS HAPPENED AND I WANT PEOPLE TO AVOID MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE

Before I started university I had no idea were i wanted to stay.
I was think of halls but due to my idiotic self. I rejected it because I had no idea if i was going to get into university at all.
But as you can guess I did. Shortly after I was rushing around trying to find accommodation and after loosing my room in halls. I had to go for private accommodation.

It was actually this website AFS that I found a brilliant private accommodation from Campbell Property. A room with a double bed, large kitchen, communal area, 2 bathrooms and it seemed perfect.
Who would not snap up a house like that.
The price was high but for the high standard I thought it wasn't too bad. Especially as my loans and grants would just about cover it.

So i signed the Tenancy agreement, got the keys and moved in.

When i met my other housemates all was great and I was enjoying uni life.My housemates consisted of 2 girls and 5 boys including myself.

But after a month, my housemates started showing their true colours.
They were always aloud in the early hours of the morning when your trying to get an early night because you got an early lecture.

Made a mess after cleaning, housemates from with their hometown mates that caused breakages. For example having a friend of theirs writing on the wall, break fire panels setting of the fire alarm.

It may seem funny but any thing like that we all had to pay out because our tenancy agreement forced us too.

The worst was that a housemate decided to work out all the room codes for everyone. It was funny at first but not when you have valuable items in your room and having your privacy broken when they come burst into your room during the night.

But I especially hated it when they kept taking items out of your room and hiding them around the house. I didn't like it when they did the same to the girls especially when one of the housemates wanted to get into the pants of one. As he would get into her bed, take photos of himself in her room and walk in after entering the code for the room.
But the worst was when she was away for a weekend and he took her bedding like duvet and pillows and slept with them.

If you can't tell this was the boys I lived with 18 - 19 years old with the mind of 10 year olds.

My last straw was when my fiancee came down for the weekend. We went out to see Due Date at the cinema. Came back to a house party and one of my housemates decided to be a git and a ********. He harassed my fiancee by trying to grind against her, and she felt someone touch her bum. I confronted him about it when the party was finished he totally denied it, even when I saw him do it and I was totally sober. Afterwards I went out for food and came back to find the same housemate had caused trouble by trying to wake a paralectic person up with a hair dryer. I was only told this by one of the girl housemates, who asked if I could say something because she was scared of him. I got abuse for telling him to stop everything because he was being a git. By the Way he had sobered up at this time.
But i went into the communal area and ate my kebab.

During this time I was speaking with the girl housemate and my fiancee. We were just chatting and then we started discussing about the night.
After which the housemate decided to imitate me and i flipped and walked right out to him. Which he then tried to act a really big hard man even though he was skinny as anything. He came so close to me I pushed him away which he became even more aggravated.

But my fiancee told me to get into the other room and cool which I did. She has far more power over me than anyone. But I walk out and he insults my fiancee which I flipped again. But I stayed away.

In the morning, I left I could handle living in that mad house any longer without getting myself into trouble.

Since then I had to get my university involved to help get the rest of my items out of the house and help sort this house out.

You would think that incidents like these if you wanted to leave and everything would be ok.

Well the tenancy agreement I signed, holds me to that house.
I still have to pay the rent of 1875 per term.
Liable for damages made in the house
and costs of running the house

And since then I've been leaving at home travelling to and from home to university because of this.
Meaning I'm in big debt on my overdraft
And to add i now have to pay for damages caused from a house party when I am not even living in the house

I can't end the tenancy agreement unless
- I get someone else in to take over my tenancy but no one wants to live in a house like this
- Or ask to leave but campbell say the landlord does not think I have good enough reason
- Pay off the rent and then pay a further amount to end it early

Eiter way I'm buggered

I am now trying to get a loan to pay off the rent and pay the extra to leave as I don't want to be associated with this house or campbell.

READ YOUR TENANCY AGREEMENTS BEFORE SIGNING AND HAVE IT CHECKED WITH OTHERS SUCH AS PARENTS AND CITIZEN ADVICE BUREAU.

CHECK ENDING TENANCY'S EARLY POLICY

CHECK PROPERTY COMPANY

NEVER LIVE WITH PEOPLE YOU DO NOT KNOW, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR HOUSEMATES HAVE KNOWN YOU FOR YEARS

CHECK THE UNIVERSITY IS REGISTERED WITH THEM AND AS THE UNIVERSITY FOR THEIR OPINION OF THEM

FINALLY RESEARCH THE COMPANY NAME AND WHAT OTHER STUDENTS HAVE SAID

I NEVER WILL BE RENTING PRIVATELY WITH THESE COMPANIES EVER AGAIN

AVOID CAMPBELL PROPERTY - TOTAL RIP OFF AND BEWARE ALL STUDENTS
