4 places to look when searching for accommodation
Posted 30 / 09 / 14

Once you have established your budget, it’s time to start your search to find your perfect private rented accommodation. These are the four main ways in which to do so:

Student accommodation websites

These are websites dedicated solely to providing rented accommodation for students, such as Accommodation For Students ( Landlords and letting agents with a particular interest in renting to students will pay a fee to have their property advertised on such sites. also has a notice board where students can find housemates or advertise a spare room.

These will provide you with a list of recommended landlord and agencies; but they don't tend to have many properties, so unless you start searching early, it's likely you will have to use another method.

Letting agents

Letting agents match tenants with properties and are paid a commission by landlords. Agencies will charge tenants referencing and administration fees, which can cost a couple of hundred pounds. However, since the cost to an agent for a basic reference is approximately £20 per person; it's likely if you negotiate they will accept a lower fee.

If you use a letting agent, it's important that you are proactive – don't rely on agents letting you know when a property becomes available; you call them. Keep checking their websites and register your details to make the process quicker and easier.

Private lets

Many landlords advertise their own properties to avoid paying any fees to third parties. Most of these properties are advertised through , specialist papers, local papers and newsagents' windows. These properties tend to go fast, so you will need to move quickly.
