Living in Kettering as a student
15 miles northeast of Northampton lies Kettering, a large market town with a population of nearly 100,000. Despite being 70 miles from London, Kettering benefits from a quick service to London St Pancras station, with quickest route taking just over an hour. It is home to one of Tresham College of Further and Higher Education’s three campuses. The 16+ and adult student population of the College, taking primarily vocational and undergraduate courses is estimated at about 3,000 full-time and 13,000 part-time students. The college provides the undergraduate courses in partnership with the nearby University of Northampton which has a student population of 12,000.
In nearby Northampton there is a good accommodation provision, with 4 student halls, all of which are university-managed. Students have a variety of rooms to choose from, starting at standard single with shared sanitary facilities, through small and large en-suite rooms, ending with single studios. Students so inclined may choose to live in a less traditional townhouse-style halls, as opposed to the typical, single-building accommodation prevalent in most cities and universities.
The lack of private-sector halls is more than made up by a variety of houses, flats and apartments on offer in the area. A good transport link between Kettering and Northampton ensures that students hoping to live in a smaller, quieter (and cheaper!) town such as Kettering will find it convenient to move in further away from university. Sharing a house with 4 or more friends is always a popular choice with UK’s students. Lower individual costs, more flexibility in choosing location, furnishing type, and size of the property are just a few among many benefits of choosing a larger property to move into with friends. Presence of gardens, a very sought-after feature these days is also a factor that many students consider important in choosing a new home. Kettering, while perhaps not the most obvious choice for UoN students, can become a perfect, countryside home for those seeking a peaceful tenancy and good transport links with the rest of the country. There usually is a good supply of flats and houses for rent, both in the centre and outskirts of the town. This type of accommodation is managed by landlords and agents whose expertise in property management is often proven by their excellent reputation.
