Meet the student team - Emma

Hello!

My name is Emma, and I am currently studying Marketing MSc at the University of Manchester. I also completed my Undergrad at the University of Manchester, in English Language and Literature and I graduated this summer with a first-class honours degree.

What I do in my spare time

I often spend my spare time reading and visiting different coffee shops around Manchester and exploring the Northern Quarter. I also really enjoy going on long walks or even going hiking. During the weekend I often plan different trips away with my house mates to places such as the Lake District to go walking there. Throughout the week, I play badminton with my flatmate at a local club.

What type of accommodation have I lived in?

Throughout University I have lived in many different types of accommodation. In my first year, I stayed in university managed accommodation in an en-suite room with shared kitchen and living space. During this time, I lived with four other flat mates. In my second year of university, I moved into a private house with 7 other girls. The house was a three-storey building with three bathrooms between us, and a large living area. In my third year, I then moved into private halls. This accommodation was a two-floor flat which I shared with 5 girls, located in the centre of Fallowfield. I currently live in a rented flat in the city centre of Manchester with one other house mate. This accommodation is ideal because I have everything I need right on the doorstep.

Favourite thing about working for AFS

I have worked for AFS since April 2020. Throughout my time at the company, I have written many different blogs, different content such as the clearing guides, city guides and supported with the social media. My favourite blog that I’ve ever written was about returning to the pub after lockdown . This blog was written last summer and discussed how pubs would be operating post-COVID and how this would impact on student life

The best thing about working for AFS is that I get to write about topics which are interesting for myself and other students, and I get to suggest ideas for the different blogs that myself and the other student ambassadors write. My future career aspirations involve working in the marketing sector after graduating from my Masters next September.

Best thing about being a student

The best thing about being a student is the flexibility. Want to go out drinking on a Tuesday and study on a Saturday? No problem. The fixed 9-5 mentality hasn’t quite kicked in yet and as a student you can mould your timetable to what suits you. However, student discount is definitely also a massive perk of being a student.

Advice for new students

My number one tip to new students starting this September is just to get involved. Try out as many things as you can and don’t hold back during freshers. Put yourself out there as much as you can, and enjoy the student life.
