5 Cheapest Summer Holiday Destinations 2014

By Simon Thompson

If you’ve read through our previous blog posts already, I’m sure you’ll know by now that I love a good holiday! But if you’re looking for less of a city break and more of a beach escape, then look no further! Having scoured the Thomas Cook website, I have found the five cheapest beach holiday destinations for summer 2014 (perfect for us students!). All holidays are based on 2 people for 7 nights on the 30th July, flying from Manchester (although prices will be similar regardless of airports). Bear in mind also that if you fly outside of the six weeks holidays, prices will be even lower, so if you think about, you can get an even better deal than the ones listed below… enjoy!

5. Benidorm, Costa Blanca

So it may seem a bit of an obvious place, but Benidorm offers plenty of good deals for holiday makers. A four-mile stretch of white sand beaches, with a skyline of sky scrapers and two theme parks, Benidorm offers something for everyone. Its nightlife is pretty wild too, with everything from foam parties to international DJs playing at the many clubs. If you want to escape the garishness of the resort, then the more authentic Spanish cities of Alicante and Valencia are just a short drive away. Prices start from £391 per person bed-and-breakfast at the Camposol Hotel.

4. Corfu, Greece

Known as the ‘Emerald Isle’ due to the masses of cypress trees and olive groves, Corfu is the second largest Greek island in the Ionian Sea (the largest being Kefalonia). The cheapest of the resorts is Kavos, a lively place renowned as Corfu’s ‘Party Capital’. Kavos has an amazing beach with shallow waters and golden sands, with numerous watersports constantly taking place. You can spend seven nights in this resort for just £372 at the Yianetta Complex self-catering, or £379 at Koulouris Beach, which as you probably guessed, is right on the beach! Relatively small in size, Corfu is easy to explore, whether you want to visit the sandy beach in Sidari, or the many shops in Corfu Town.

3. Marmaris, Turkey

Turkey is now the second most popular holiday destination for us Brits, with Marmaris offering extremely good deals! Marmaris is famed for its nightlife – especially popular amongst young people – with many bars and clubs stretching the length of the long sandy beach. It also offers beautiful scenery, set against a backdrop of pine-clad hills, and ancient ruins. What’s more, it’s only an hour boat ride away from the beautiful Greek island Rhodes, so effectively, you could get two holidays for the price of one! Prices start from £361 per person self-catering at the Mustis Family Apartments, or £370 at the Club Sunset Apartments.

2. Rhodes, Greece

Located in the Aegean Sea, many of Rhodes’ resorts offer low cost holidays for us to enjoy! First up is Faliraki, with its cheap bars and clubs, 5km beach and the largest water park in Europe; with 7 day holidays starting from as little as £369 per person at the Old Windmill Studios. If you’re looking for a more… sophisticated holiday, then for £384 per person you can either stay at the Sunshine Hotel in Lardos or Karpathios Studios in Pefkos, both boasting beautiful sandy beaches; and not far from the popular resort of Lindos with lots of shops and tavernas!

1. Majorca, Spain

As the nation’s favourite holiday destination, it’s no surprise that its topped the list in our cheapest summer holiday destinations of 2014! And like Rhodes, there are many resorts that offer cheap holidays this summer. Coming out on top is the Moreyo Hotel in Cala Bona for £358 per person - a traditional fishing village, with a 2km sandy beach. Another option is the Citric Soller Hotel in Puerto De Soller for £378 – a small village surrounded by mountains, just half an hour away from the bustling city of Palma.

Whichever destination you choose, you’re guaranteed to have an amazing time – and after all of our hard work at Uni, we certainly deserve it!
