Top tips for staying motivated while writing essays By Simon Thompson |

There is nothing worse than opening your laptop to a blank word document that needs to be filled with 2,000 words by next week. (Ok, there are worse things but it is pretty soul-destroying). It’s hard to stay motivated when writing an essay so we’ve got some tips to help you get motivated and get going.
Split your day into 3.
I’ve recently been introduced to the 2-1 study method and I already think it’s great. Basically, you spilt your day into 3 and, for example, spend your morning and afternoon working and then take the evening off. That way you’ve got something nice to look forward to and haven’t spent the whole day buried in your books. So, get writing and treat yourself to a guilt-free takeaway with your mates or a night out with the peace of mind that you've worked hard all afternoon.
Cut out all distractions.
If you're rewarding yourself with a half hour social media break for every 200 words you churn out, you’ll be writing that essay forever. Switch off your phone (or at least turn the Wifi off) so you’re not tempted to check your Facebook notifications every two minutes. And just remember, the sooner you get the essay written the sooner you’ll be able to catch up on the group chat.
Study playlist.
If music helps you concentrate, then whip up a playlist of the tunes that motivate you most or stick on a Spotify study playlist like this one and get writing.
Take breaks.
In an ideal situation, we would all be able to smash out a 2,000-word essay in one sitting but it’s just not realistic. After about an hour your brain will probably start to turn to mush and what you’re writing probably won’t make much sense. So, make sure you give yourself a break every hour or two. Make yourself a cuppa, have a quick chat with your flatmate or have a scroll through Instagram – just make sure you don’t actually end up spending an hour on there…
Library time.
A rowdy flat is great for nights out but so much when you’ve got work to be getting on with. If you’ve got noisy flatmates take yourself to uni and set yourself up in the library for the day. Seeing all the other students around you working will definitely motivate you to get writing.
Snacks. Lots of snacks.
Raid the corner shop and stock up on your favourite chocolate, it’s the only way to get through those late nights at the library.
Think about the debt.
Remember that you’re paying £9,000 a year to do your degree so, of course, you want to get a good mark. Realising that you are voluntarily putting yourself in debt for this degree is sure to give you the kick you need to get working.
If all else fails, ask your pals on your course how much of the essay they’ve done. There is nothing more terrifying and motivating than knowing everyone is way ahead of you - it will have you rushing home to get writing for sure.
