Spy software tracks student’s stolen laptop By Simon Thompson |

Police tracked down a thief who stole a student’s laptop by monitoring his internet usage with antitheft spy software loaded on to the computer.
Now, police are urging students to download and activate the software to deter thieves on campus and at student houses.
The call followed the recovery of a laptop in Nottingham.
Student Alastair Frankl, 20, was away from home sitting an exam at the city’s university when his room was burgled.
Alastair had installed Lojack for Laptops, spy software that police can activate that is similar to the tracker software in cars and lorries.
Two weeks after the theft, technicians at Lojack led police to someone accessing the stolen computer by monitoring their internet access.
The software reported which sites the crook was viewing and his IP address, which let police find his identity and address.
The software is available by download from Absolute Software (http://www.absolute.com/en-GB/lojackforlaptops/home.aspx ) and can be loaded in a few minutes. On activation, the web site will request the laptop owner’s details for their files and the software sits dormant until a loss or theft is reported.
Detective Sergeant Craig Luckett, of Nottingham police, said: "Alastair's story shows just how valuable LoJack for Laptops can be to officers investigating a burglary. The software is very quick and easy to install and requires no general maintenance apart from keeping contact details up-to-date.
"I urge anyone starting out at university to take a few minutes to have LoJack for Laptops downloaded or their property registered by one of the team."
The software, which costs around £40 for two years cover also offers enhanced security against ID theft by protecting personal data and deleted files.
The software lets the firm recover laptops with wiped hard drives with special technology that lets the code reinstall after deletion.
