Will I be guaranteed accommodation?

Ensuring you secure accommodation for your first year at university is important. In the UK, many students will typically go into university owned accommodation. However, there are other alternative options such as private halls of residence or shared houses. Here we discuss whether you will be guaranteed accommodation, what type of accommodation and what to do if you are not.

How does it work?

Each university will have their own accommodation guarantee policy, and so it is best to check this before you apply. Some universities guarantee accommodation to all first-year students who apply before a certain deadline, while others do not. In many cases, universities will guarantee accommodation to those who make the university their firm choice. Those who choose it as their insurance will have the opportunity to apply at a later date, but may not be guaranteed university-owned accommodation.

The location of the university can also affect your accommodation guarantee. Some universities are located in areas where housing is in high demand and limited, such as Bristol or Glasgow, making it more difficult to secure accommodation. This may also mean that accommodation is located further away from the university.

What kind of accommodation can I live in?

Typically first year students live in university halls of residence. These are owned by the university and house only students attending that institution. Some students may prefer private halls or a shared house, which is a great alternative if you cannot secure university owned accommodation. What happens if I go through clearing?

Many universities will reserve rooms in their accommodation for students who go through clearing. Your university will send you all the relevant details once your place has been confirmed. It is a good idea to do a bit of research on the accommodation available, such as the cost, location and amenities, before applying. If none of the accommodation which is available is right for you, you can certainly explore alternative options such as private halls of residence or a house share. Summary

Whether you are guaranteed accommodation depends on several factors including your university’s policies, its location and how you were accepted into the university. It is best to check your university’s accommodation guarantee policy early so you can begin researching and ensure you get an application in before any deadlines. If you have any questions or concerns, we advise that you get in touch with the university’s accommodation office.
