5 items you need to survive as a first year

Settling into uni can be a daunting experience. While it definitely takes more than just tangible items to survive, here are 5 items I would say are necessary to survive as a first-year!

First-aid kit

This may seem like an obvious one, but make sure you have a first-aid kit in your room before you actually need it. A small one with basic plasters, antiseptic cream, and some basic cold and flu medicines will be a lifesaver to help you combat unexpected problems at uni!

Bags

This might seem like a silly suggestion, but you never really realise how many bags you go through in your daily life. Bags are so helpful for your books and laptops, your weekly shops, and sometimes to carry your laundry to and from the washers and dryers!

Make sure you’re well stocked with reusable bags, and also make sure you find your perfect uni bag to accompany you to lectures and tutorials.

A great bag is versatile, durable, and most importantly, comfortable to carry around on days where you have a packed schedule. If you're lugging around heavy items, I have discovered a rucksack is usually the best for this purpose as over-the-shoulder bags can cause back aches if used frequently.

Canned and frozen food

In uni flats where storage is limited and people are fighting for shelf space, canned and frozen food will be your best friend. Not only is it cheap, but so easy to cook and can be the best way to get your 5-a-day into your daily diet!

Canned lentils and frozen veg are delicious, versatile, and an essential if you want to prioritise taste, space, and your health.

Extension cords

You can never have too many plugs. Whether it’s for your kitchen appliances or your electronic devices, having an extension cord is a game-changer. Not only does it give you more plugs, but also allows you to charge your devices wherever you want, allowing you to move your furniture around at your convenience, instead of at the plug’s convenience!

Room decor

This may be the most important thing on the list. Making your room your own space is key to having a good time in your first year. While you will spend a lot of time in uni or with friends, it’s important to have a space where you can wind down and relax.

Look for budget-friendly home decor options in B&M, Primark, or even your local Poundland. There are also apps like Snapfish that do great deals on printing pictures so you can be surrounded by pictures of your loved ones from home.

Remember, uni doesn’t have to be intimidating. Once you have the right people and right things, it’s all smooth sailing. Have fun!
