Understanding the market has been key to the success of the business for
the last fifteen years and as we are currently investing heavily in the
website, the basis of our planning for the next ten.
As we are just about to start our programme of student research for 2018,
by launching our annual lifestyle survey, it is a good opportunity to
reflect on what students told us were the key things they sought from
student accommodation in 2017.
In our research we find that proximity or easy travel links to university
is generally the first consideration. This has been a consistent finding
over the last five years. It typically ranks higher than price, however,
this is because the accommodation budget is generally fixed within certain
amount and is therefore perceived as less of a discretional choice than
location.
Outside of price and location the most important features are a fast
internet connection, bills included, good storage space and double
bedrooms. It is interesting to note that a majority of students believe
that the people they live with are more important than the property
features.
Finally, it is worth noting that most of the students who complete our
research believe that having bills included within the rent both makes life
easier and enables them to save money and that 90% of students would like
to rent a property which has been accredited by an official body.
