Northumbria University
Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumbria University gained university status in 1992, with roots stretching back to 1877. Its City Campus puts studying close to Newcastle’s shops, cafés and cultural venues, while Coach Lane Campus sits around three miles away. Northumbria ranks 37th in the Complete University Guide 2027, with Forensic Science, Physiotherapy and Information Technology & Systems all in the UK’s top ten. It also holds an overall Silver rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2023, with Gold for student outcomes.

Northumbria’s Graduate Futures team helps students explore careers, find experience and prepare for applications. Fees
For 2026/27, standard full-time undergraduate tuition fees for UK students are £9,790 a year. Different rates apply to some foundation years, placement years and study abroad years. International undergraduate fees are generally £19,850 or £21,500, depending on the programme, while postgraduate fees vary. Bursaries
Northumbria offers scholarships and financial support with different eligibility requirements. Its NU Belong programmesupports care leavers, estranged students, student carers and Sanctuary Scholars through tailored advice and practical help. Eligible students may receive up to £2,000 a year through the NU Belong Fund, with applications assessed individually and funding subject to availability. Sports scholarships are also available. Accommodation
Northumbria’s accommodation options include self-catered rooms with shared bathrooms and en-suite choices. For 2026/27, Stephenson House starts at £121.05 a week for a Bronze bedroom on a 43-week contract. At New Bridge, next to City Campus East, standard en-suite rooms cost £175 a week, with 43- and 51-week options advertised. The university’s published 2026/27 guarantee covers eligible new first-year, full-time undergraduates who accept a course offer and complete the booking requirements. It guarantees a room in university-owned or commissioned accommodation, with preferred residences subject to availability. Check the conditions for your entry year. Students' Union
Northumbria Students’ Union brings together societies, events and opportunities to make your voice heard through student representation. It also offers wellbeing resources and a food pantry. For help with academic appeals, university procedures or housing issues, its Advice Centre provides guidance, including information about deposits, inventories and problems with rented accommodation.
Famous for
Northumbria is known for connecting learning with practical experience. Its Student Law Office, established in 1991, gives students opportunities to work on real legal matters while providing free services to the public and community groups. The initiative received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2013, recognising its contribution to education and the community.
News
In October 2026, Northumbria announced a £1.38 million sustainable surface technologies network, jointly led with Newcastle University and supported by Sunderland Software City. The project brings researchers and industry together to develop greener coatings, reduce hazardous materials and support manufacturing processes that make products easier to repair, reuse and recycle.
