Student guide to St Andrews

St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland, founded in 1413, and it offers a student experience unlike any other. The town combines academic reputation with centuries of history, and also a coastal setting; it remains small and easy to travel and navigate.

The town houses a student population of around 10,000 students, and has only a handful of main roads. The university itself is scattered throughout the town, rather than remaining in one single area, which creates a close connection between university students and the local community. The university provides smaller class sizes, which helps add to that friendly, community feel. It allows students to get to know their classmates better and make the most out of the teaching. The university ranks with consistently high student satisfaction, which shows current students enjoy the learning environment they are in, and find it supportive and beneficial.

St Andrews has plenty to discover, with lots of history, retail and other activities to do. Students can explore the ruins of the St Andrews Castle and Cathedral, as well as walking along the historical pier and browsing independent small businesses in shops and bookstores. Not only this, but St Andrews is also known as the Home of Golf, which adds yet another layer to its intriguing identity.

The social scene in St Andrews steers away from big nightclubs, and heads more towards social pubs, live music and Student union events. Combined with the town’s strong sense of community, historical character and its coastal location, St Andrews offers a memorable and distinctive university experience.
