Student Guide to Hyde Park in London

If you’ve ever visited London it’s likely you’ve walked through or past the great leafy greens of Hyde Park. And if you haven’t visited London yet, you should definitely add this iconic park to your itinerary.

Hyde Park sits comfortably in the centre of the city, a green oasis that borders Kensington, Belgravia, Mayfair, and Paddington - some of London’s most iconic neightbourhoods. This means there are many ways of accessing the park and endless routes you can take.

Within the park you’ll find The Serpentine, an open-water lido that you can actually swim in during the summer months! It’s also home to Britain’s oldest swimming club.

While the Serpentine is certainly the most impressive body of water, if you stroll west towards Kensington Palace you’ll come across the Round Pond (and likely many species of birds swimming and strolling around too).

The park also holds many historical memorials, such as the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain and The Albert Memorial just opposite the Royal Albert Hall.

The park is lively all year round, but becomes especially active in the Spring, becoming a popular spot for dog walking, horse riding, picnics, coffee stops by the lido, and even a football match or two. On a Sunday you can even visit the Speaker’s Corner in the Northeast part of the park where people are free to share their opinions in a public performance.

If you’re feeling peckish and didn’t pack your picnic basket visit The Orangery inside Kensington Palace, the Colicci Serpentine Lido cafe by the water edge, or the Serpentine Bar & Kitchen on the other side of the water.

Hyde Park is a great place to spend an afternoon with your friends, catch some fresh air in between lectures, or go for a jog. Just make sure to be respectful of the resident animals and plants!
