5 things to do before you leave for Christmas

It is that time of year again when most students decide to head home for Christmas. This means that student properties are likely to be left empty for a few weeks. Here are some simple ways you can ensure your property is safe and secure before you leave.

Security

Before you leave, make sure all windows are shut properly, and where possible, locked. You may also want to lock your bedroom door if you are able to. Finally, and most importantly, ensure you have securely locked the front (and back) door. If you live with others, it is a good idea to discuss in advance who will be the last to leave and who will be responsible for this. Should anything happen whilst you are away, we also recommend having contents insurance so any belongings you have left in the property are covered.

Kitchen

No one wants to come back after Christmas to a smelly house! Before you leave, take all your bins out. You might want to look at the last bin collection dates too. Again, this is likely to be the responsibility of the last person to leave so remind them that they need to do this. We also recommend that you empty the fridge and cupboards so you don’t return to any rotten or mouldy food either.

Heating

Whilst it may seem like a good way to save money, turning your heating off completely is a bad idea! To avoid your pipes freezing whilst you’re at home, we recommend setting up a timer on your boiler so your heating comes on for a couple of hours each day. You may want this to be in the morning and evening. This just helps to maintain the pipes, the temperature of the property, and reduce any mould or damp building up.

Water

To avoid any leaks, it is a good idea to turn the water off at the mains. If you’re unsure of how to do this, or where this might be, get in touch with your letting agent or landlord to find out. Check that all your taps are also tightly secured too.

Switch off

Finally, switch off any plug sockets that won’t be in use and turn off all the lights when you leave to save on any unnecessary electricity usage. This helps to reduce any electrical faults or fires too.
