Packing your whole life away to bring to uni doesn’t seem easy at first, but what can really help is an essential pack list! I believe you should always begin with the important documents and keep them in an easily accessible place, like your backpack. Key documents should include:
- Passport
- Visa or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
- University offer letter
- Accommodation proof (tenancy agreement or hall confirmation)
- Travel and health insurance papers
- Any other official letters from your university
Next, make a list of all the gadgets and chargers you need. These will help you with university work and keep you connected with your loved ones, such as:
- Phone and charger
- Laptop and charger
- Earphones/headphones
- Powerbank (1–2)
- iPad/tablet
If you are an international student, I recommend taking a universal adapter since UK plugs are different from most other countries.
Food from home
One of the most important things for me is food. Bringing food from home helps you adjust better, as it makes you feel closer to home. This includes imperishable food items like packed snacks, dehydrated foods, and anything that can be stored for longer, such as:
- Packaged snacks (e.g., chips, biscuits, granola bars)
- Instant noodles/dehydrated meals (2–3 packets)
- Tea/coffee
- Specialty foods from home (e.g., spices, sweets)
Clothing for the UK weather climate
Clothing is also essential when coming to the UK, as the weather here is often extremely rainy or windy. A funny story: when I first came to the UK, I thought umbrellas would stand a chance against the strong rains and winds, but they didn’t last long. What really kept me going was puffer jackets with a hoodie. So, warm clothes are a must:
- Heattechs/Thermals (3–4 pairs)
- Puffer jackets (2–3)
- Basic T-shirts & pyjamas (4–5 sets for home)
- Socks (10–12 pairs)
- Jeans/trousers (3–4)
- Weatherproof shoes/boots (1 pair)
- Umbrella (compact and sturdy)
Toiletries
Don’t forget your toiletries and medicines, as they are essential for daily life. Pack the basics you’ll need for personal care and health, such as:
- Toothbrush (1) and toothpaste (1 tube)
- Shampoo (1 bottle) and conditioner (1 bottle)
- Soap or body wash (1–2 bottles)
- Hairbrush/comb (1)
- Skincare products (face wash, moisturizer, sunscreen, etc.)
- Deodorant (1)
- Razor and shaving cream (1 each)
- Toilet paper (1 pack, especially if you prefer a specific brand)
Medicines and a small first-aid kit should also be packed:
- Pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen, paracetamol)
- Cold and flu medicine
- Any regular medications or prescriptions you need (with a copy of the prescription)
- Plasters/band-aids (a small box)
- Antiseptic wipes or ointment
Other useful items might include:
- Laundry detergent (small pack or pods for quick use)
- Reusable water bottle (1–2)
- Backpack or tote bag for daily use
- Notebook, pens, and stationery for university
- Luggage locks (for security)
Tip: Try to pack light to save you the cost of bringing multiple cases. Remember that you can buy stationery and toiletries in the UK too (unless you use specific brands.)
