Are you planning to take a placement year to get some experience whilst at university? They are a great chance to build up your knowledge and skills in a practical setting, whilst looking great on your CV to graduate employers. But how can you best prepare? Here are some top tips below!
Set placement goals
Your university might already ask you to do a similar task involving setting goals or targets for what you aim to achieve. This is a great way to build a good picture in your head of what skills and knowledge you’d like to gain from the placement, as well as giving you something to aim for by the end!
Update LinkedIn and CV
Whether you’re applying for a placement currently, or are ready to connect with your network at the placement host organisation, tidying up your LinkedIn and CV are a great way to make a good impression. Showcase your skill set, what you’re looking to get experience in, and what experience you already have!
Plan a budget
Placements can be expensive… Especially with a reduced student loan or if you’re abroad! Try to budget carefully, utilise part time work if possible, and try to calculate how much you’ll need to save to fund your placement experience!
Network with alumni
A great way to meet connections in the industry, whilst gaining valuable insight in placements and application processes! Use LinkedIn or university alumni networks, including mentoring schemes, to reach out and quiz previous placement students about what their experience was like and if they have any advice!
Align your placement with career goals
It’s important to ensure your placement is a valuable use of time- it’s a whole year in industry you’re often committing to outside of your studies, so use it wisely! Check what organisations can offer you in terms of experience, knowledge, and skill set building. Will this align with your future career goals? Will this be a good use of your time for future employers to be interested in that experience you had? Choose wisely!
