What to enjoy after moving home from uni

Everyone says the uni years are “the best years of your life” and when you move home after graduating you begin to realise just how much you miss it all, the nights out, study sessions, seeing your friends everyday, the midnight debriefs…

Going back home can feel quite quiet after living in a rowdy student house especially when the rules change, no longer can you eat at 3am without judgement.

Whilst your family home always feels like home, it can still feel a bit weird to be back after moving out and it takes a bit of getting used to for your routine to return to normal.

Things to enjoy now that you’re home

There was once a time when you were nervous about the transition of moving to uni, but now the narrative has reversed.

  • At least now that you are back living with family you are more likely to spend less money on food, rent and bills. This will help you save some money to put towards your future.
  • I personally extremely enjoyed having a homecooked meal and not having to make food for myself every night anymore, although I do still cook for my family a few times a week as this was something I learnt to enjoy whilst living away from home.
  • You can also catch up with old friends or family that you might not have had lots of time to see or talk to whilst you were at uni.
  • Find spare time to relax a little (at least to start with) to help you regain energy after sitting your final exams. Maybe use this time to retake up hobbies you enjoyed in the past or learn something new.
  • With souvenirs and memorabilia from your time at university, you will have new ways to redecorate your room, even if it’s just adding a few photobooth pictures to your collection.

Next steps

It’s nice to relax for a bit after finishing your studies, to spend some time with family and friends, after all the break is definitely well deserved. However, whether you have just a few weeks until your graduation or a few months, it is important to keep yourself busy too – applying for jobs, getting some work experience etc. so that you don’t fall into a rut. Or, maybe you’ve already managed to land yourself a job (if so, congratulations!)

Graduation quickly acts as a reminder and puts your goals for the future into perspective, helping you organise your time so that you can start putting steps forward in the right direction and getting your foot into doors of careers.
