Sustainable living: eco-friendly accommodation options for students

When I first moved to the UK as an international student, I didn’t really think about sustainable living. I was more focused on adjusting to the weather, cooking for myself, and figuring out how student housing actually works. But once I settled into my accommodation, I realised how much your living environment impacts both your budget and the planet.

There are small features and habits that can make a big difference, and many student properties already offer sustainable options without making it a selling point.

1. Look for accommodations with bills included

Bills included might not sound like a sustainability feature, but it often is. When heating, water, and electricity are fully managed by the accommodation provider, the property usually uses more energy-efficient systems and better insulation to keep costs predictable.

In my first year, our student flat had automatic heating timers, when the indoor temperature reaches a certain level, it will automatically shut off. Small things that kept the place warm without wasting energy. It also took pressure off our flatmates, especially during winter when using heating responsibly is important for both comfort and sustainability.

2. Energy-efficient appliances and facilities

Some student accommodations provide energy-efficient appliances, like A-rated fridges, LED lighting, and modern washing machines. These don’t just reduce energy consumption; they also make everyday life easier.

I remember being surprised at how much less electricity our induction hob used compared to the one I had at home. Small upgrades like this make eco-friendly living feel effortless.

3. Good recycling systems matter more than you think

A lot of student properties in the UK now provide proper recycling bins and food waste collection. When I lived in a shared student en-suite, we had clearly labelled bins in the kitchen and large recycling containers outside. It made our weekly routine simpler and helped everyone stay consistent (even the flatmate who always forgot bin day).

Having a clear recycling system is one of the biggest indicators of an eco-friendly accommodation.

4. Shared spaces help reduce waste

Choosing shared accommodation — whether a student flat or a shared house — is also one of the more sustainable options. Sharing a kitchen means sharing appliances, cookware, cleaning supplies, and sometimes even food. Instead of five students buying five toasters, one good-quality toaster is enough for everyone.

This naturally cuts down on waste and makes student living more affordable.

5. Location can also be eco-friendly

If your accommodation is close to campus, shops, or bus routes, you’re more likely to walk or use public transport instead of relying on taxis or long commutes. Many students I know chose accommodation based partly on how easy it was to get around, and it ended up being an eco-friendly choice without them even realising it.

Thoughts on living sustainably

Sustainable living isn’t about being perfect; it’s about making small choices that help both you and the environment. Eco-friendly accommodation options for students often come down to good insulation, energy-efficient appliances, shared spaces, and accessible recycling.
