The best Spotify playlists to listen to whilst studying

It’s another day at the library.
You sit down at a desk, pull out your laptop, and attempt to tune out the noise that surrounds you.
Sometimes, even in a silent study room, it can be incredibly hard to focus on your studying. I find that putting in headphones to drown out the outside world is helpful to focus solely on your work. Yet, you might be struggling to find the perfect playlist that works for you.
Whilst the well-known ‘Mozart Effect’—a theory claiming classical music increases intelligence—has been disproven, scientists suggest that silence is often the best option when studying. However, plugging in your headphones and removing outside distractions can still be beneficial.
The genre of music you should listen to depends on the type of work you are completing: how important it is, whether it involves reading or writing, and so on. So, keep reading to find the perfect playlist for you!
Classical Music
There are mixed reviews as to whether classical music improves or impairs studying and focus. However, it’s important to keep in mind that everyone is different, and music affects people in unique ways.
I find I focus well with classical music, particularly piano pieces. These are especially helpful for reading tasks as they motivate me to work without distraction. Try the playlist ‘Best Classical Music’ for an introduction to relaxing instrumental tunes.
Classical Music with a Twist
‘Classical Pop Covers’ is a playlist featuring classical covers of popular songs. This might not be for everyone, but it can be nice to listen to familiar tunes without the distraction of lyrics.
This playlist works well for writing assignments where some concentration is needed.
White Noise/Pink Noise
What’s better than silence? White noise!
If your surroundings are quietly noisy (an oxymoron, but I always find silent study areas include whispering or the rustling of snacks), then white noise—or pink noise, which has a lower pitch—can help. It’s been theorized that white noise could improve memory and support focus by tuning out distractions.
If white noise isn’t for you, consider background sounds like rain or nature sounds instead.
A Random Chilled Playlist
Find a random playlist of a genre you like. Personally, I often opt for chilled playlists because I believe relaxing while studying is vital.
By using a random playlist, you’re less likely to be distracted by songs you already know. Try ‘Lo-fi Hip Hop Music – Beats to Study/Relax To’, which features tracks without lyrics—perfect for focusing on reading tasks.
Jazz Music
If you want to switch things up, try ‘Chillout Jazz Music’ while you study.
Jazz has been linked to promoting creativity and reducing stress, making it an excellent choice for work sessions.
Whether you lean toward silent studying or prefer some background noise, music can ease your mind and reduce stress. Listening to one of these playlists before, during, or even between study sessions can be helpful.
