Top 5 Poshest Universities
The UK is home to some of the most prestigious and well-known universities worldwide, with many of them known for their ‘posh’ reputations amongst students. We can all certainly name a few, but what are the top 5 poshest universities here in the UK? And more importantly, what makes them so ‘fancy’?
University of Oxford
Unsurprisingly coming in at number one, Oxford is famed across the world for its notable alumni, with 28 British prime ministers studying at the university! Its high proportion of private school students, difficult entry requirements, and longstanding elite traditions, ranks it as the UK’s fanciest.
University of Cambridge
Coming in just behind Oxford, Cambridge is the UK’s second-most reputable university, almost equally as known across the globe. With another impressive alumni network of Prince Charles to Sir David Attenborough, there’s definitely a reason why around 22,000 apply to study annually.
University of St. Andrews
As another university with royal connections, this prestigious Scottish institution is where Prince William met Kate Middleton when students. Not quite as globally renowned as Oxford and Cambridge, St. Andrews is still very competitive to get into, with just a 20-25% acceptance rate. Being a much smaller campus may add to its exclusive status, including its long-standing traditions like the May Ball and wealthy social scene.
Durham University
With a prestigious collegiate system and high-achieving students, Durham is another posh UK university with competitive entry requirements and formal traditions. These range from formal dinners, to gowns, and wealthy student-scene, ranking it as the 4th poshest in the country.
University of Edinburgh
A second Scottish university to make the list, Edinburgh has a high proportion of privately educated students. With a rich cultural history and more exclusive events and societies, the university certainly makes itself attractive to wealthier students looking for a fancier, more prestigious university experience.
So, that’s the top five! I definitely wasn’t surprised when checking out the list as most of them are well-known for their prestigious reputations and exclusive alumni, but I definitely could add a few more that come to mind too…
