Which is the best type of accommodation for me?

Universities offer a range of accommodation. It is important that you decide what set up is going to be best for you in your first year. Typically, students will enter university owned halls but this isn’t always right for everyone. Here we discuss the range of options that you can choose from:

Halls of residence

Most universities offer halls of residence, which are typically located on or near campus. These can be a good option for first-year students or those who want to live in a social environment, as they often have shared common areas and facilities. They are a great way to meet people at your university and potentially coursemates. However, they can also be noisy and lack privacy.

Shared houses or apartments

Another option is to rent a room in a shared house or apartment with other students. This can be a more affordable option and allows you to live with friends or meet new people. However, it can also come with its own set of challenges, such as disagreements with roommates or difficulty finding a suitable place to live. This is more common with mature students who may not want to enter halls in their first year, or students who can’t find suitable halls.

Private accommodation

If you prefer more independence and privacy, you may want to consider private accommodation such as a studio or one-bedroom apartment. This can be more expensive than other options, but can provide you with a greater level of control over your living situation. Some student halls do offer studio flats within their buildings so it is a good idea to explore this as it still offers the chance to meet first year students.

Homestays

Some students may prefer to live with a host family, also known as a homestay. This can be a good option if you want to experience local culture and practise your language skills. However, it may not be suitable for everyone, as it can involve living with strangers and adjusting to a different lifestyle. This also may be more restrictive if you wish to go out and return at early hours of the morning.

To conclude, when choosing the best type of university accommodation for you, consider factors such as location, cost, convenience, and personal preferences. It can also be helpful to research different options, read reviews from other students, and speak with your university's accommodation office for guidance and advice.
