Good neighbour guides emailed to student houses
Eguides explaining about acting as good neighbours have been emailed to thousands of students and landlords in Manchester. The specially written guides for students living off campus in private shared homes were emailed out by Manchester City Council. The guides offer hints about staying safe, putting out their rubbish and even asks them to volunteer to give their time for free to a wide range of organisations across the city. Manchester City Council has worked with both of the city's universities to produce the guides, which are e mailed to students moving in to the popular Fallowfield and Withington neighbourhoods The guides are in response to thousands of complaints about students from other city residents. The guide gives simple, common sense advice to students living away from home for the first time, like placing non-recyclable rubbish in bins, not in loose bags at the side of the bin and to make sure that the bin is kept on the property when not out for collections. It also tells students that as much as 70% of what they throw away can be recycled, together with information about how to use their recycling bins. Students are also offered personal security tips, like being aware of their surroundings when using mobile phones or wearing headphones, as well as advice about being good neighbours, such as meeting neighbours, showing consideration to people living nearby and keeping gardens tidy. Councillor Bernard Priest, Manchester City Council's executive member for neighbourhood services, said: "Students are an important part of many of our communities but for many of them, moving off campus will be the first time they have lived in houses away from their parents, and this guide provides everything they need to know from putting their bins out to keeping safe. "I'd like to urge them to take a few minutes to read it and take on board what it says to help get the most out of their time in Manchester."
