Only 32% of students think their degree is good value for money

The annual AFS Student Lifestyle Survey explores key characteristics of students’ life at university including course satisfaction, finances, social life and eating habits. In 2018, the survey also included questions about equal opportunities, diversity and mental health.

Over 50% of students are satisfied with contact time they receive at university and learning resources. However, when it comes to value for money, the percentage of students feeling satisfied is lower (32%). Despite this, only 51% would vote for a political party proposing to abolish tuition fees.

Two-thirds of students have more than one source of income. Since 2014, student loan is the most prevalent, followed by money from parents and family member, savings and term-time employment. 39% of students have a part-time job and 62% work during university holidays. Because many students rely on a student loan, 26% are expecting a debt of at least £50 thousand upon graduation.

Most students (78%) say they try to keep a healthy diet, with 85% cooking for themselves daily. However, 58% do also buy ready-to-eat meals and 66% eat fast-food at least once a week. Tesco, Aldi and Sainsbury’s are the top three most popular supermarkets for students, and most of them spend up to £29 a week on food.

The most popular social media channels are Facebook and Snapchat. However, their usage has decreased over time, while the popularity of Instagram and YouTube has increased.

Half of the students are in favour of gender-neutral toilets, believe their university promote gender equality, and think that all religious beliefs are catered for on campus. Unfortunately, 10% of students have already been a victim of prejudice, violence or burglary, and 53% have witnessed someone being groped in a bar/club. Three in four students know where to go if they need mental health support.
