Data released by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) unveils a significant surge in the number of 18-year-olds applying for university or college placements in 2024.
According to UCAS figures, a remarkable 316,850 UK 18-year-olds have ventured into the realm of higher education applications this year. This marks a notable increase of 0.7% from the previous year, positioning it as the second-highest figure on record.
Additionally, the application rate for UK 18-year-olds stands at 41.3%, experiencing a slight dip from the previous year's 41.5%, but representing a significant improvement from the 38.2% reported in 2019.
Dr. Jo Saxton, Chief Executive at UCAS, commends this development, emphasizing the importance of broadening access to higher education opportunities.
"It's encouraging to see record high numbers of disadvantaged students applying for university, with more of these students aiming high for the most competitive courses," she states.
A rise in international applicants.
While the surge in applications is predominantly driven by UK students, the allure of UK higher education extends globally. The data reveals a parallel increase in the number of international students vying for undergraduate places, mirroring the 0.7% increase witnessed among UK applicants.
Noteworthy spikes in applications from countries such as China (+3%, +910), Turkey (+37%, +710), and Canada (+14%, +340) underscore the cosmopolitan nature of higher education aspirations.
Shifts in course preferences.
Amidst these encouraging trends, shifts in course preferences offer valuable insights into the evolving academic landscape. STEM courses emerge as frontrunners in student interest, witnessing a notable surge in applications across engineering and technology (+10%), mathematical sciences, and computing (+7%). Conversely, applications to nursing have decreased across all specialisms, with a significant fall in demand driven mainly by reductions in UK mature applicants (-10%).
Predicted future trends.
Looking ahead, Dr. Saxton extends a reassuring message to prospective students. With the deadline for applications extended until 30 June and avenues like Clearing offering additional opportunities, the path to higher education remains open and inviting.
“For any students who missed the deadline or are still undecided on their next steps into higher education, they can still apply until 30 June, and afterwards directly to Clearing, and plenty of choice still remains.
“There is a wealth of support, guidance and tips on the UCAS website to help anyone make informed choices about their futures.”
