Students in the UK are placing growing importance on the quality of their accommodation when choosing a university, according to a new report.
The GSL Index's latest data shows a positive trend in student accommodation experiences, with overall satisfaction levels increasing.
This year's 'exit' wave saw a record number of responses from more than 64,000 students living in both university and private halls.
The report, which is published in partnership with College & University Business Officers (Cubo), found that satisfaction is rising, and students are enjoying a 'positive overall accommodation experience’.
Some have a less positive accommodation experience
Cubo's Sue Pimblett said: "The report highlights that in many cases, whilst students in general are happy with their accommodation, the student cohorts more vulnerable than others have a less positive accommodation experience, impacting their overall university experience and likelihood to stay for the duration.
"The report also details some clear opportunities for the industry to act upon, make improvements and enhance the experience for these cohorts."
Student accommodation experience
Some of the key findings from the GSL index on student accommodation experience this year include:
- Accommodation a growing priority: The number of students who consider accommodation 'very important' in their university decision has risen from 57% to 59%
- Satisfaction gap closing: The gap in satisfaction between private and university halls is narrowing, with a current difference of only 2%. Both sectors have seen satisfaction increase, with private halls reaching 78% (up from 77%) and university halls reaching 76% (up from 74%)
- Wellbeing on the rise: There's been a positive shift in student wellbeing, with fewer students reporting struggles with depression and anxiety. Also, more students (67% compared to 59%) feel their accommodation plays a positive role in their wellbeing
- Cost of living concerns: For the first time, there's a larger percentage of students struggling with having enough money to get by (36%) compared to those who struggle with budgeting (33%). The number of students who have difficulty finding part-time work has also increased, highlighting the financial pressures many students face
- Sense of community vs friendships: While a greater number of students report feeling a sense of community - particularly in university halls - there's been a drop in the number of students who say they've formed close friendships.
Improve the student living experience
The report recommends a multi-pronged approach to improve the living experience for all students in university and private halls, especially those from vulnerable groups. This includes:
- Leadership and data: Appointing a dedicated leader to oversee improvements and using data to understand student needs better
- Accessibility and communication: Encouraging students to disclose needs, creating inclusive environments and ensuring clear communication materials
- Room allocation and building design: Providing more choice in roommate selection and accommodation type, conducting accessibility audits and adopting universal design principles in new builds.
- Student wellbeing: Collaborating with students to organise events, prioritising maintenance - including faster lift repairs, addressing noise issues and improving sensory aspects of buildings.
'Growing importance of student accommodation'
Simon Thompson, the managing director of Accommodation for Students, said: "The report highlights the growing importance of student accommodation in the university selection process.
"While student satisfaction is on the rise, there are areas that require attention, such as the impact of living costs and fostering closer social connections within student housing."
He added: "There's a lot for all providers of student accommodation to take on board and there's no doubt that accessing quality accommodation is an increasingly important part of choosing a university.
"That's to be expected as student landlords see demand increasing but not every student town or city is delivering enough accommodation for meeting that need."
