NRLA release statement following replacement of the Housing Secretary

The Prime Minister announced on the 7th September that there would be a reshuffle of his cabinet for the first time during his time in office.

Angela Rayner will be replaced from her former role as Housing Secretary at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG.) In turn, Steve Reed will be stepping up to take over.

The NRLA issues their support of the new appointment and states what differences they expect to be made with the new Housing Secretary in charge, regarding the Renters’ Rights Bill and changes to the private rented sector.

The Renters’ Rights Bill

The NRLA says that the reshuffle of the cabinet comes at a very crucial time as it occurs just a week before the Renters’ Rights Bill progresses further in Parliament (in hopes of moving closer towards receiving royal assent.)

According to the NRLA, the RRB is “one of the most significant pieces of legislation to impact the private rented sector in decades.”

As a result, all of the effects of the RRB will be dealt with by the new Housing Secretary once it comes into force.

NRLA welcomes the new Housing Secretary

In response to the confirmation that Steve Reed will be appointed as the new Housing Secretary, the National Residential Landlords Association released an official statement.

Ben Beadle, Chief Executive of the NRLA said:

“We welcome Steve Reed’s appointment as Housing Secretary.

“At a time of substantial change for the rental market, we look forward to working constructively with him. Top of the agenda will need to be ensuring the smooth implementation of the Renters’ Rights Bill.

“Alongside this there is a desperate need to support long term investment in new decent quality homes to rent and ensure the private rented sector operates on the basis of trust and confidence between landlords and tenants.”
