What makes a positive city living experience for students?

Our recent research shows that a number of factors are taken into consideration by students which helps boost their overall experience of living in a city as a student. The city being affordable for university students is top of the list.

What do students look for?

Affordability

Lower-cost was highlighted as a factor in increased enjoyment as this ensures that students can make the most of their university experience by being able to enjoy life beyond the essentials.

Student-friendly atmosphere

Students look to feel welcomed and catered to, both socially and commercially. Without social events or budget-friendly discounts available, it is hard for an area or accommodation provider to feel like they take into account the needs of students.

Accessibility and walkability

It was mentioned multiple times that compact, easy to navigate cities are highly valued. These areas tend to cause less commuting or transport stress.

Smaller student towns tend to be more successful with this due to most places being walkable, however, equally transport services are deemed less reliable in those areas.

Diversity and identity

Students value multiculturalism and a city with a distinct identity. This helps to widen the boundaries of experiences by trying new things but also by allowing more students to feel more included.

Safety

Feeling safe was highly valued by a vast majority of students, it was particularly mentioned as a positive in smaller towns where danger at night time is seen as more uncommon.

Green spaces

Having access to green spaces nearby is a great way for students to relax and unwind during exam season. Improving mental health and making cities more enjoyable. For this exact reason, Richmond Park in London is an extremely common area of visitation amongst many students.
