University Upset Over £60 Million Student Village ‘Spoiler’

University planners are clashing with student accommodation providers in a multi-million pound row over who should build flats in Salford, Manchester. Salford University gave the green light to a ‘masterplan’ to replace aging buildings on the campus with a new £30 million student village overlooking the city’s Peel Park. But developers Manor property group have spoilt the party with proposals before city planners to build a luxury £60 million development of 1,100 student flats close to the campus on Adelphi Street. The university claims the plan may scupper their own plans to reinvigorate the 11 unsuitable buildings and may consider opposing the development. A Salford University spokesman said: “The Manor Property group application is under review and we will respond in due course.” Manor Property group claims the university was consulted before the planning proposal was submitted. The university wants halls to house at least 250 students each - at the same time as the council is initiating a city-wide ban on new student houses by making them apply for planning permission. The university is also investing millions in a new maritime research institute in a collaboration with Lloyds Register that focuses on transport, energy and the environment. Hundreds of students will work with engineering and technical staff from Lloyd’s Register on the £40 million campus. Residents object to ‘massive’ student village Canterbury residents have put together a 100-page objection to University of Kent plans to build a £60 million student village at the city’s Chaucer Fields. The university is seeking to build halls for 760 students, houses, a hotel and conference centre on the site, which makes up part of the campus. Residents claim the development is ‘massive’, out of keeping with the area and too close to their homes.
