The University of Southampton was formed in 1862 and received a royal charter in 1952 and is now home to over 20,000 students. Solent University is home to 17000 students and is strengths lie in design, consultancy and training. It is also home to the Warsash Maritime Academy, which offers training and certification in international shipping and off-shore oil.

When it comes to things to do, Southampton has plenty to keep you occupied. It is home to the longest surviving stretch of medieval walls in England, as well as lots of museums. If boats are your thing, the annual Southampton Boat Show is held in September each year on the city/s waterfront. There are two large theatres in the city as well, one of which has hosted many west end shows.
