What should I do if I fall out with my landlord?

Speak to your landlord:

If you have a problem, go straight to your landlord first before going elsewhere. Remember that you are both adults and there should be a level of respect.

You have to reach a conclusion you are both happy with, so let them know what this issue is and see what can be sorted. Even if you think you are right and they are wrong, try stay calm and respectful.

Check your tenancy agreement:

The tenancy agreement should fill you in on what you're entitled to and what you should do. It will also tell you what your landlord should be doing.

Make sure you understand these - It can make your point seem a lot more legitimate if you know your facts beforehand!

Get outside opinions:

If you can't resolve the issue directly with your landlord, it might be a good idea to get advice from elsewhere. This can include a housing charity, legal advisor or your university may even have a service such as a student union advisor. Remember if your dispute is about the return of a tenancy deposit you should be able to use their dispute resolution service.

Keep records:

Keep records of all communication with your landlord, including emails, letters, and phone calls. This can be good to keep track of dates, what was stated and more.

Make a formal complaint:

If you have tried all other options to sort the problem out and nothing's working out then its probably time to make a formal complaint. Your landlord should have a particular complaints procedure so check their website for that. Or you could do it through a third-party body, like the local council or a housing ombudsman

This should be a last option, if talking directly with your landlord hasn't been going well or there has been no progress or improvement.

We get that falling out with your landlord can be a challenging situation to deal with. However, by communicating calmly as well as knowing when to source external help, you can work towards resolving the issue in a respectful and professional manner.
