Safest UK University Cities

Feeling safe, especially in a new city, is of paramount importance for many. Whether you come from a large city or a small village, you will want to feel comfortable. We carried out a nationwide survey, and asked students both how they would rank their city in terms of safety, and why they gave this score. Here we have compiled a list of the safest cities in the UK, as ranked by students.

York

York came out on top with the most number of votes. Students shared how they feel safe, both during the day and at night, with one revealing it is “Genuinely the safest I’ve felt in any place.”

Those at the University of York also praised the campus safety team for their patrol cars, and lighting. Some did note that the city can become overcrowded with tourists and race weekends.

Exeter

At number two is Exeter. Many referenced how the city is small and very populated with students which helps you to feel safer. There are also plenty of police at night, adding to the secure atmosphere.

Plymouth

The southern coastal city was ranked third. One student recalled how they feel they can go anywhere safely, recognising many students also feel safe enough to walk alone if needed. Like York, there is also a student night patrol system in place. Nevertheless, some responses did state that in certain parts of the area they felt less safe but they did not explain why.

Manchester

At number four is Manchester. Many participants once again said the student nature and population of the city greatly contributed to their ranking. At the University of Manchester, there are also security patrols operating. However, some comments did note that in the student areas there are often incidents of petty crime such as mugging and robbery.

Cardiff

Rounding off the top five is Cardiff. The Welsh capital is a walkable city, with university buildings close by to one another at all universities. With most students living in Cathays, there are often students walking home together after nights out, with security services available too.
